Exhibition of major art donation from a private owner
8 February 2022 - 8 July 2022

The works were created between 1931 and 1962. The different motifs and artistic expressions reflect the fact that the paintings span a long period of time. The oldest of the eight works is Landscape in Sunshine (1931), which Mikines painted when he was 25 years old and a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Mikines went on to paint Christian motifs too, as is evident in two of the paintings dating from 1944 and 1945. Notice how Mikines has incorporated a Faroese rowing boat into the Christian motif. Mikines also painted a number of pictures featuring Danish subjects. For example, there is a landscape picture depicting Bovbjerg in West Jutland, and a large painting of a Midsummer’s Eve bonfire.

The generous donation of these eight significant works are a valuable addition to the museum’s collection of paintings by Mikines. If you would like to see more paintings by the artist, visit the museum’s ‘The Ocean’, ‘Landscape’, ‘Traditions’ and ‘Portraits’ rooms.
