Leopold Museum er eitt hámodernað listasavn, bygt í 2001, og er ein av høvuðsbygningunum í MuseumsQuartier í Wien. MuseumsQuartier er ein av heimsins størstu listamiðdeplum við út við 3,5 milliónum vitjandi um árið. Mitt í hesum listamekka verður tað størsta úrvalið av føroyskari list sýnt fram uttan fyri Føroyar. Eysturríkska listasavnið er upprunaliga eitt privat savn, men nú alment. Í savninum eru fleiri høvuðsverk eftir mæta eysturríkska listamanninum Gustav Klimt og heimsins størsta savn av verkum eftir Egon Schiele.
At hetta listasavnið nú hýsir eini stórari føroyskari framsýning, er orsakað av einari hending av heilt øðrum (bólt)slagi fyri fleiri árum síðani. Tað var í 1990, tá ið Føroyar og Eysturríki hittust til fótbóltslandsdyst í Landskrona í EM-undankappingini, og føroyingarnir vunnu heilt óvæntað 1-0. Hetta eyðmýkjandi tapið er ongantíð gloymt, men er við tíðini vorðið ein partur av tilvitskuni hjá eysturríkarum, og forvitnið er økt samsvarandi. Hvørjir vóru teir, hesir norðbúgvar, sum á sinni vóru til dystin fús í Landskrona?
Kuratorurin Dr. Michael Fuhr úr Leopold Museum var í Føroyum í nógvar dagar í 2007 og fekk hollan kunnleika um bæði eldri og yngri list. Hann valdi 86 verk út til framsýningina í Wien. 35 listafólk frá Sámali Joensen-Mikines til ta ungu Anniku á Lofti eru umboðað. Úrvalið av verkum er øðrvísi enn væntað, tí fleiri siðvandir listamálarar, ið mest av øllum fáa íblástur frá náttúruni, ikki eru so væl umboðaðir, sum roknað varð við. Hinvegin eru fleiri onnur listafólk við, sum arbeiða meira í tí stilla, men sum kortini kunnu gera seg galdandi á altjóða listapallinum. At síggja føroyska list úr hesum nýggja sjónarhorni er bæði áhugavert, kveikjandi og fær okkum at endurskoða hana.
Dr. Michael Fuhr og Dagmar Warming, MA, savnsleiðari á Ribe Kunstmuseum og ráðgevi á Listasavni Føroya, hava skrivað tekstirnar til framsýningarskránna, sum Leopold Museum og Listasavn Føroya geva út. Tekstirnir eru á týskum og enskum, og øll verk eru endurprentað í skránni.

Modern Art from The Faroe Islands
Art exhibition in the Leopold Museum from the 16th May until the 7th September 2008.
The Leopold Museum is a highly modern art museum, built in 2001, and is one of the main attractions in the Museums Quarter in Vienna. The Museums Quarter is one of the world’s greatest art centres with around 3,5 millions visitors a year. In the heart of this Art Mekka the visitor will have the chance of witnessing the biggest selection of art from the Faroe Islands ever exhibited outside the Faroes. This Austrian art museum is originally a private collection but is now on public hands. Here the visitor may witness many significant art works by the great Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and the world’s largest collection of art works by Egon Schiele.
The source behind the exhibition is not an artistic one but a footballing one. In their first ever competitive match in 1990 the National Faroese Football Team shook the footballing world by claiming a sensational 1-0 victory over Austria in Landskrona in the Euro 1992 Qualifiers. This humiliating defeat has never been forgotten by the Austrian but became a part of their conscience, and their curiosity has ever increased. Who were these people from the north who took the world by storm in Landskrona?
The curator Dr. Michael Fuhr from the Leopold Museum visited the Faroes for several days in 2007 to learn about older and younger Faroese art. He selected 86 art works for the exhibition in Vienna. 35 artists from Sámal Joensen-Mikines to the young Annika á Lofti are represented. The selection is quite different than expected because many of the leading contemporary artists of today, who find inspirations from the nature, are not represented. Many other less visible artists on the other hand are including but they can also make a great impact on the international art scene. To witness Faroese art from this angle is both interesting, inspiring and makes us revise it.
Dr. Michael Fuhr and Dagmar Warming, MA, director of the Ribe Art Museum and consultant in the Faroe Islands Art Museum, have written the texts for the catalogue which is published by the Leopold Museum and the Faroe Island Art Museum. The texts are in German and English and all art works are reproduced in the catalogue.
